The Dry Bones Speak

There is evidence the children were thrown down the well after the adults

There is evidence the children were thrown down the well after the adults.

As most of us who’ve visited Israel know, it’s almost impossible to build anywhere in that ancient land without uncovering some significant archeological find.  And it turns out that Israel isn’t alone in this respect.  European soil is also filled with ancient artifacts.  Thus it was no great surprise when construction workers preparing the ground for the Chapelfield Shopping Center in England discovered seventeen bodies at the bottom of a medieval well.

Scientists have studied these bones using a combination of DNA analysis, carbon dating and bone chemical studies.  Last week, they announced that these seventeen bodies had most likely been Jews who were murdered by their Christian neighbors in the twelfth or thirteenth century.  Eleven of the seventeen skeletons were those of children.  Five of the skeletons belonged to a single Jewish family.  The bones showed no signs of disease.  But the fractured skulls of those at the bottom showed that the victims had been thrown down the well head first.

Norwich had been the home of a thriving Jewish community since 1135, and many Jews had lived near the well site.  But Norwich bears the blemish of being the site of the first recorded blood libel against Jews – the accusation that Jews engage in the ritual murder of Christian children.  William of Norwich was an apprentice tanner who frequently entered Jewish homes for his work.  When he was found dead in 1144, the community accused the Jews of crucifying him.  As this and similar libels spread, they eventually motivated the massacre of Jews in Norwich, York and London.  In 1290, King Edward expelled all Jews from England.

Such a find should come as no surprise.  Most of us know that the history of Jews in Europe was punctuated by persecution, forced conversion, torture and death.  Yet such a stark reminder of this vicious past in our present day still has the power to shock.  It’s as if some of the dark hate that motivated these murders was bottled up with the bodies and is just now being released into the air.  It sends a chill up our spines as it passes by.

And indeed, the hate that killed these Jews still rides the winds of Europe.  Many Europeans still spread dangerous lies about Jews.  There can be no denying that there exists today in England and across much of Europe an opposition to Israel that surpasses any rational criticism of an imperfect nation state.  What reason cannot explain, human emotion – hate – most certainly can.

The haters no longer accuse Jews of killing Christian children for their blood.  Instead they accuse Jews of killing Muslim children for their land.

If these old Jewish bones could speak, they would no doubt echo the words of the prophet Ezekiel, “Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we are cut off!”  Yet we can take comfort in knowing in fact what these Jews had to take as an article of faith.  Their dark fate is being reversed in our day.  Ezekiel’s prophecy is being fulfilled.  The Jews have been brought up out of the vast grave of Europe and other lands of persecution and have returned home to Israel.

In fact, the miracles of our day go beyond the rebirth of Israel and the end of exile.  They extend to the very relations between Christians and Jews that sparked the Norwich tragedy and thousands like it.  The miracle is that this history of Christian hate and persecution is being reversed before our very eyes.  And Christians United for Israel and the millions of Christians who are speaking out for Israel in her time of crisis are the pioneers of this long-awaited reconciliation.

Where in the past there was only hate, today there is also love.  While at one time there was only silence, today there is loud support.  Israel’s founders helped end the Jews’ physical separation from their land.  We are helping to end their emotional separation from their Christian brothers  in faith.  We cannot change the past.  But together, we can combat the libels and hate that still chase the Jews in our day.  This is our precious opportunity.  And this is our sacred obligation.

  3. It blesses my heart that we’re brought fourth by God to be a help for Israel. In times past it seems there wasnt much help for Israel in the earth, an now through the Grace of God there is! I praise God for His Works of salvation, an that by that we’re empowered to be a help to His chosen people. My prayers be with all who call on the Name of the Lord, an who stand with His chosen people Israel!

  4. Hate is taking over all. As a young girl living in Alabama the hate shown as I was growing up was shown to black people. I did not understand it then and still do not now. Little did I know that as I got older another hatred had been rearing its fiflthy head for thousands of years. I am filled with deep, deep sadness over the murders and horrible persecution meted out to God’s Chosen People. I feel honored that Jews allow me to pray for them and their God Given Land and Lives.

  5. Okay, where do I start?
    1) We who are Christians, “Followers of Jesus Christ” know that true Christians couldn’t have done this but…

    2) We know that these were done in the name of Christ.

    3) We know that Satan very early on in the growth of Christianity sucessfully put the wedge of distrust between Christians & Jews

    4) If we are to bridge the gap between us and the Jews, we have to be honest about our history & be sure to never let evil false teachers & prophets in our midst to destroy the bond between us & the Jews.

This horrific act was done around the time a “Blood Libel” was issued around that time, whcih was a lie saying that Jews used the children of Christians as a sacrifice to have blood in their matzo balls for Passover. This is a fact in history, it has been accurately atrributed to Christians, and whether we now believe those murderers were true Christians or not, the unsaved & the Jewish community do not distinguish the difference. All they know is that these atrociities were performed in the Name of Christ.

Therefore, what do we do about it? Accept that it happened, that it is a horrible blemish on our history, and work harder as individuals to protect Jews & Israel. Vote for legislators who will stand with Israel, support charities who stand with Jews & Israel. Go to a church that supports Jews & Israel.

  6. “the hatred from the Arab side is understandable since they are found of exhibiting their inferiority through hostility and extremism” This is not a hate statement, is a lucid definition of outward and inward disposition of a people. That you tell some one the truth of what he is doing is not hate. And this can not be compare to the language used by Nazi’s toward the Jewish people. God have mercy on us. we are becoming too pious that we are getting completely ignorant of the devices of the devil. This are the reasons why we preach the gospel of Christ this Days with out the authority of Christ. This is why a moralist will not see a reason why he/she should be a christian, because they will tell, why most i go to Christ? i don’t still, don’t fight, am a good person and could be confirm among my people.
We should be able to watch before we pray, we should be bold to tell what the devil is in it manifestation through people, this in no way means hate.

  8. I am thinking about the situation and how ruthless a killing it was. I wonder if it was a dry well or were they so angry they threw them down a good well. It is not a fitting place no matter how angry they were. It would make me angry at Christians but who as time to be angry at history. I am glad these Jews are remembered as well as the Christians.

  9. I am a fervent supporter of CUFI, and I display in my front window a large pro-Israel poster, yet I am greatly disturbed by the too often violent treatment in Israel of Messianic Jews.
The authorites because of politics turn their backs and are silent about this persecution.
CUFI should use its clout with the Israeli Government to lobby for a fair treatment of the Messianics, but they too are silent.

  10. I was around 8 years old when I came to the realization that the Jews were God’s chosen nation, and I am not!

50 years later, I am still in awe of the Jews

I have this unshakable conviction in my heart – don’t EVER mess with a Jew because if you do, you are trying to stick your puny little finger in the Eye of the Creator, and you will never get away with it.

Regardles of what the Jews do, they are have the blessing of Jahwe upon them and they need all the support, love and care we can give them
    and sad
It will be a terrible day when God’s decides enough is enough with this messing of his special people.

We need to pray and do anything we can to protect them as they are truely a wonderfull people

  12. I consider it an honor to pray for God’s chosen people. It was by his design that salvation came first for the Jew and then the Gentile. He has a perfect way of working it all out. I pray even now for Israel to see that their Messiah is Jesus Christ!

  13. I agree Michael and though this is all feel good stuff and I am happy that the Jews are free (are they really?) what is going on in Israel is an atrocity. Everyone wants to think oh it’s only terrorist Muslims that the Jews are killing, but if any one of you did a little research you would find that anyone that is NOT Jewish is being killed. Israel should abide by the treaties they signed and live in peace, but they choose not to. They use ‘God’s chosen people’ as an excuse to murder all non Jews. And that includes you Christians. I am not against a Jewish land or freedoms, I am against murdering others to attain it. The promised land will never be until they embrace Jesus. In the meantime, they use that as an excuse to murder. (Not all Israelis are like this just like not all Muslims are terrorists) If they want to live a segregated life by all means, idiocy but whatever, stay out of the other territories and live in the Dark Ages without forcing it on the rest of the world. Peace.

  14. Are you justifying the house repossessions, the illegal settlements, the village demolitions and the blockade of Gaza by the fact that in England, a Jewish family got murdered in the 12th or 13th century?

  15. I would consider it laughable if it weren’t so sad when people claim that Israel is just going around murdering non-Jews! Really? Israel is America’s ONLY real ally in the middle east. Was it Israel that came against America? Israel literally has bombs aimed at her night and day all year round. Nothing is said about the attacks on Israel. The only time you hear the liberal press is when the Israel take measure to defend herself. Did anyone here study history? You have got to be kidding to say that the Jews are just going around killing those who aren’t. Israel gave up more than enough land to the Palestinians and yet they will never be happy. By their own voice they have said they want Israel and America to be wiped off the map. People need to wake up!

  16. Praise GOD for his love and mercy. I’m afraid not only Europe committed these acts against the Jewish people, I’m afraid that America also will turn away from their support. Actions by our Whitehouse and remarks made by our leaders should be a warning to the citizens who are watching changes taking place in this country. GOD has a plan and we will most likely see it through in our lifetime. GOD bless Isreal. Thanks for such a great article of history.

  17. JEHOVAH and one is the majority! I really think Israel is going to pull our rearend out of this musulam mess. I think Psalm 83 is in play. Most people think Armegido is the only big war left. I have seen books written on the musliam antichrist. It is pretty well known these people are not reading THE HOLY BIBLE that I read. There are at least two wars left. The war fought on the Judian hill as in Ezekel and the Battle of Armagedding. I promise you this, when you go against our Jewish Brothers and Sisters in the country of Isreal, you are going to get your tell kicked and good. I am with my Jewish Brothers and Sisters and so goes Israel, so I go!!! I think the antichrist will be Jewish and from the tribe of Dan. Just as Daniel , Zechariah and Jacob stated. I believe Alexander the Great was Jewish from the tribe of Dan. I think the arabs around Israel has got to be the doumbest people in the world!! Does the six day war ring a bell? I wander how many more times they have got to get their rear end kicked before they leave Isreal and my Jewish relatives alone? If the Church was any Church at all; We would be pushing this rotten government to see that Israel gets more LAND!! Look what they aer doing with it! As Churchill said; The arabs had that land for almost two thousand years and what did they do with it? NOTHING!! Now the Jewish people has done something with it, the arabs want it! I have read the script and I know how this play is going to end. My SAVIOR CHRIST JESUS GOD has already WON!!! I am grafted into the vine of Isreal. I THANK YOU LORD JESUS!! I LOVE YOU ISRAEL AND MY JEWISH BROTHERS AND SISTERS!! Sincerely Donald D. Graham.

  18. I agree that ppl should recognize The Most High’s Chosen People… Too bad there are none in Israel today. They are scattered abroad the earth as the bible says. The ppl in Israel today are not the original Hebrews from the bible. They are converts. Don’t believe me, read the entire bible and 2 other books : From Babylon to Timbuktu and 13th Tribe.
