Last week, both President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu staked out their positions on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.  Their speeches have launched a thousand commentaries about Israel’s pre-1967 borders and the best way to achieve peace in the Middle East.  But missed in this torrent of talk were three significant departures from prior positions.

In his May 19th speech, President Obama declared that “the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.”  Not only did the President emphasize the ’67 lines, but he did so in the absence of any corresponding Palestinian concessions.  Both in his original speech and in his clarification of that speech before AIPAC, President Obama failed to mention the key Palestinian concession – the rejection of the Palestinian “right of return” to Israel, i.e. the “right” of the millions of grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original 1948 refugees to “return” to Israel and turn it into another Arab state.

As a result, President Obama has taken Israel’s maximum concession – the lands Israel won in the defensive war of 1967 – and effectively turned it into a precondition for negotiations.  This isn’t the first time President Obama has performed this bad magicEarly in his term, he insisted that Israel freeze all “settlement” construction, including in Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem.  This demand didn’t bring the Palestinians to the negotiating table – it forced them from it.  Once President Obama had insisted on the construction freeze, the Palestinians had no choice but to do so as well — something they had not previously done.  President Obama has now doubled down on this failed strategy.

Equally troubling, President Obama embraced this one-sided peace formulation after Fatah and Hamas had signed their unity agreement in Cairo.  For all intents and purposes, Hamas is now a part of the Palestinian government.  Yet Hamas is an unrepentant terrorist organization, and is recognized as such not only by the United States but also by the European Union.  The Hamas Covenant not only calls for the violent destruction of Israel, but it also embraces the murder of all Jews no matter where they live.

And Hamas has not changed.  While certain Hamas leaders have made some noises about supporting the creation of a Palestinian State in the West Bank and Gaza, no Hamas leader has recognized Israel’s right to exist or rejected terror.  Now is not the time to pressure Israel to negotiate with a Hamas government.  Now is a time to cut off United States support for that government.

Finally, most commentators have overlooked the crystallization of a significant shift in Israeli politics.  For years, all Israeli governments rejected the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza.  In the early 1990’s, the Labor party and other parties on the Israeli left officially embraced this concession, while the parties on the right – including Netanyahu’s Likud – continued to oppose it.  Last week, we saw Prime Minister Netanyahu stand before the American Congress and clearly and repeatedly state his support for the creation of such a Palestinian state.

In other words, even the leader of the Israeli right is prepared to make this historic, painful and risky concession if it would bring peace to Israel.  Meanwhile, the key player on the Palestinian right – Hamas — still longs for the day when, to quote their covenant, “The stones and trees will say ‘O Moslem, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.’”  Likud has moved towards the center.  Fatah has moved toward Hamas.

Yet, somehow, Israel is seen as the obstacle to peace and Netanyahu is portrayed as the extremist.  Blaming Israel like this isn’t simply a failed negotiation strategy.  Singling out Israel is a moral failure of the highest order.

  3. I wish Obama would quit pretending to be an American citizen and leave our country! All he wants to do is destabilize our government , and bring curses on our nation by standing against Israel and with our enemies. He’s a disgrace to this country! Obama go back to Kenya where you are from!!!!!

  4. Anyone ever wonder why obama doesn’t wear an American flag lapel pin, or why he looks away without saying the pledge of allegiance? He should be impeached from office, and expelled from this country forever for this! He’s a disgrace to America. I feel sorry for the men and woman who have to protect this fraud!

  5. I know that I do not stand alone when I say that Obama will be the fall of the United States, one example is that he is slowly taking the Lord from everything in the U.S this country was built on the word of God,And He has always protected us, if we don’t do something to stop Obama he will be the reason for our failure.I realize that the U.S was not in great shape when Obama was elected but at least we still had God.

  6. Obama got elected through deception. Obama lives in darkness and from his own heart, desires to spread darkness. He has to follow his heart which is influenced by Satan. Is he not serving his master? Before he was elected there were many clear warnings. If a man is OK with gay marriage,,OK with abortions,(the murder of children still in the womb)OK with every kind of anti-Christian thing that comes down the pike, and the whole while claiming to be a Christian,, Does the bible not say,, you will know them by their fruit. Has Obama not also said (on many occasions) I am proud to be a Muslim. One cannot serve two masters.I guess what I am saying is that Obama is a phoney and a liar and many Weak Christians sat on there rear ends and did nothing to stop it or to even shed light on the wing-nut. Barrack Obama is not my president, I do not even consider him an American, he is also a disgrace to both the black and white community. SUPPORT ISRAEL OR BE CURSED.

  7. Obama you are a disgrace to this land of the (not so free anymore). You disgrace the American people, even the ones that voted for you. We all know you are a Muslim and that is the reason you are doing all this before your %^%&$ is kicked out of the presidency in 2012. Go back to Kenya where you belong, with your Muslim friends and family. I don’t know how in the hell you were never kicked out by the Supreme Court. You conned your way into the White House and even disgraced it. GET OUT OF DODGE!!!!!!!

  8. Great blog! It is more than a moral disgrace-the way Mr. Obama is treating Israel.Blaming Israel. It’s stupidity of the highest order. Most everyone watching can see it too. Like an emperor with o cloths, to many are afraid to respectfully say, get real Bub. Israel has NOT been the bully! And the shameless pandering to Hamas…they are worse than the KKK. Does Mr. Obama not see that? I know what he says with his words, at times, is reassureing, like when he spoke to the Jewish assembly but what he does is beyond ickee. It’s straight up wicked, to demand that Israel stop building in Jerusalem, it’s own capitol and to not clearly require Hamas to acknowledge Israel, as a permanent Jewish state. Now. Before further negotiations`for land be discussed, much less demanded. Both sides need to respect the existance of other people’s right to breath! Hamas-and other parts of the so called government of Palestine needs to show and speak some good faith. We are listening. And we are not stupid like our present president pretends. (He is my pres even if I did not vote for him. And the respect I owe and show is to the office, as much as the man or his misguided ideas. Every American needs to at least show respect for his office,as elected president. I pray the Most High will change him and help Him show a healthy respect for the G-d of Israel. Partly cause it’s wise and good. Partly cause He’s coming soon and it’s better to be on His side than fighting against Him. (A quick read even, of the Old Testament, bears that out for the wise to see.)

  9. IF we are speaking of the same G-D (Yahweh), then HE knows, whom He has allowed to serve as President. It is a part of HIS divine plan.

  10. If Obama goes on with the plan to divide Jerusalem he is going to have a rude awakening when the Lion of Judah roars!!!

  11. There is no better point of agreement to bring the people of America that still hold true the words of our founding fathers revealed in the Constitution that defines our Judeo Christian foundation. There is no better focus point to hold such beliefs than in our total commitment of solidarity with Israel.

  12. America is turning its back on our God YAHWEH in every area of Gods commandments at home and abroad. America is systematically falling for political correctness and too compliant with false doctrine rather than standing in Gods truth. The land of “Milk and Honey” is given by God to the descendents of Abraham. The chosen Jewish people were commanded by God to eliminate the wicked and sinful nations and take the land for themselves and through obedience, many hardships in their history, and the promise to them by God, Israel is now a nation. I say to Israel, do not negotiate your God given promise-ISRAEL. Trust in YAHWEH and fight for His promises and all that He has delivered to you. I say to America, obey Gods commandments and serve Him only. Without YAHWEH, America will fail. America, do not turn you back on YAHWEH. America, do not turn your back on Israel.

  13. You sarcastically criticise the “right” of return for people who were continuous and lawful residents in the region for centuries but were forcefully driven from their homes, yet fail to mention the Law of Return which is the Israeli legislation that gives Jews, those of Jewish ancestry, and their spouses the right to migrate and to settle in Israel and gain citizenship. According to Israeli law, a person who has absolutely no ties to Israel apart from the fact that their ancestors lived there 3,000 years ago has greater rights than someone whose family has lived there for generations. You don’t think it’s fair that Palestinian refugees who were expelled from their own country should be able to go back to their family homes, but someone who by chance was born into a certain religion should have every right to “return” somewhere they’ve never been??? That’s RACIST HYPOCRISY.

You also say that if Palestinians were given the right to return (which is a right enshrined in international law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and extended to all displaced persons and refugees) it would create “another Arab state”. No, it would mean there would be an Arab majority but in theory that shouldn’t change anything. In a fair and democratic state it shouldn’t matter who is the majority and who is the minority, all people should have equal rights and fair representation. Also, why is an Arab state a bad thing but a Jewish state a good thing? Why does Israel have to be a Jewish state, why can’t it be a state that respects all religions and all ethnicities? By saying a country is “Jewish” or “Muslim” or “Christian” a bias is automatically created and one group’s needs will take precedence over another, which shouldn’t be the case in a free and democratic state.

At the end of the day, one person’s rights cannot trump the rights of another person. Both Israelis and Palestinians should have the right to self-determination and freedom from fear and persecution. You can’t deny someone their basic rights in order to protect your own as Israel currently does under the guise of “security”. That’s not security, that’s injustice.

  14. In response to John Steinhauser and Tim’s comments, you talk about expelling the Palestinians and exterminating them (“There will be no peace in Israel as long as the palestinians are alive”)….now that sounds very familiar…I believe that course of action was very popular amongst the Nazis as well.

  15. OK people how many times do you have to hear WE ARE GOING TO DRIVE ISRAEL INTO THE SEA? DEATH TO THE GREAT SATAN(AMERICA)AND LITTLE SATAN(ISRAEL)is what the muslims are saying. Palestinions you love hearing stories about dogs slitting babies throats. You truly are a peace loving nation aren’t you? And the most important one of all who matters GOD JEHOVAH is grieving about the way they and we are treating his son(ISRAEL). Don’t believe in GOD monica? You will one day when you stand before HIM. Why do you think Israel has survived this long? NO it isn’t because of AMERICA being a friend and ally. It’s because GOD JEHOVAH is WATCHING OVER THEM(THE JEWS). Honey you and others like you continue to watch Israel. Yes they are going to suffer but in the end it will be the JEWS who come out the winner. PRAISE GOD JEHOVAH BLESS HIS HOLY NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
