Osama Bin Laden is dead.  But there is still no peace in the Middle East.  Thus the pressure being placed on Israel to take ever greater risks for peace will continue to mount.

In Washington, there is an emerging consensus that we must force Israel to make significant concessions to the Palestinians in the hope of luring them back to the negotiating table.  And in capitals around the world, there’s mounting agreement that the time has come for the United Nations General Assembly to recommend the creation of a Palestinian state.

It is at times like these – when the world most urgently demands progress – that it’s least likely to hear Israel’s arguments or heed her concerns.  But it’s also at times like these that Israel sometimes benefits from the powerful testimony of a most surprising witness: the Palestinians themselves.  At critical junctures during Israel’s long struggle for peace, the Palestinians have often take actions which highlight why Israel must be cautious about her partner for peace.  It becomes harder to downplay Israel’s concerns when the Palestinians so clearly validate them.

In the last week alone, the Palestinians have taken two steps that clearly demonstrate why Israel must be careful in the risks she takes for peace.  Last week, the Palestinian Authority agreed to reconcile with Hamas.  The PA and Hamas are expected to sign a formal power-sharing arrangement tomorrow under which they will form a joint government.  Hamas has not agreed to renounce terrorism.  Hamas has not agreed to recognize Israel.  And Hamas has not agreed to negotiate with Israel.  Yet Hamas will now be part of the Palestinian government with which Israel is expected to negotiate peace.

Of course many observers would rather overlook Hamas’ bloody record of rejectionism and imagine them as a potential partner for peace.  Thus it was with perfect timing that Hamas leader Ismail Haniya commented yesterday on the killing of Osama Bin Laden.  While the entire civilized world expressed relief that this arch-terrorist now sleeps with the fishes, Haniya stated that “We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood,”  In addition – and even more troubling — Haniya referred to Bin Laden as “an Arab holy warrior.”  He added that, “We ask God to offer him mercy with the true believers and the martyrs.”  Eloquent testimony, indeed.

Hamas has a stockpile of mostly short-range missiles which it doesn’t hesitate to fire into every Israeli population center they can reach.  Today, Hamas controls only the Gaza Strip, and these missiles threaten only Israel’s southern cities.  If and when Hamas had sufficient power in the West Bank, these same missiles would be able to reach almost all of Israel, including every part of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.  The major risk that Israel would take in any transfer of West Bank land to Palestinian control is that Hamas would snatch it away from the Palestinian Authority as quickly as it took Gaza.  The developments of the past week highlight how very real this danger is.

Israelis overwhelmingly want peace, even if it means making painful concessions to the Palestinians.  And they have a solid track record of taking serious risks for peace.  But the Israelis have learned the hard way that they cannot want peace so badly that they ignore harsh realities.  Thus we must listen to the Israelis when they express their concerns.  And it is equally important that we listen to the Palestinians when they validate these concerns.  Quite often both sides are giving us warnings that we should heed.

  1. Why should Isral bend over backwards for the Palensteins at The United States urgeing because the U.S. has a muslim president who wants everything going the muslim way? I think not. Isreal has evey right to fened their country any way the see fit–includeing leveling the GAZA .

  2. Islam is a death cult, and death is all it can promise. It revolves around death, and nothing else. Islam is the whole problem in the Middle East. Love, happiness and peace is a alien thing to Islam. Misery, killing, hate, and discontent is all Islam can offer.

  3. Israel is right to never trust Hamas and as much as they desire peace ,no amount of concessions will do.First, last and always hamas and palestinians want to eradicate all jews and the palestinian state will still be at Israel’s expense.
If America puts pressure on israelto give more concessions God will judge them even more than they are now. We pray for israel every day. God bless [Shalom]

  4. May Jesus touch the hearts and lives of both the Muslim and Arab youth, and start a revolution in the Middle East the likes of which has never been seen before!
Israel cannot negotiate with an enemy sworn to wipe her off the map. The PA teach their children that all of Israel is part of ‘Palestine’. They teach lies – from the father of lies.
God’s Word and promises for Israel stand high above the words of the Muslim Brotherhood and every organization they spawn. We must stand with Israel against this threat. Concessions to terrorists have never achieved the desired or promised results.

Remember the events of 2 Chronicles 20:21-23:
After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.”
As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

May the enemies of Israel find themselves in ambushes set against each other, and may the USA stand strong on the firm foundation of God’s word, in support of Israel! May Jesus invade the hearts of the people of the Middle East, and bring both salvation and peace!

  5. There will never be peace between the Palestinians and Israelis and anyone who believes this is possible has not read God’s holy word the Bible. Until Jesus returns there will be no peace. The land belongs to Israel and they have paid the price with their blood. God bless Israel.

  6. What does President Obama’s allegedly being a muslim have to do with it? The man is not a muslim. He previously attended a christian church in Chicago prior to becoming president. My pastor sat next to him at the Easter Prayer Breakfast that was nothing near a muslim event. I really want to support this movement, however sheer stupidity in perceptions is a complete turn off. If the goal is to come together to support Israel, then stick to the subject! Otherwise, others will be turned off to the cause. I do support Israel.

  8. Brog,

as a conservative American Jew (who, like so many others, was raised in “the liberal faith” — but finally saw the light on 9/11) I highly commend your article. You are indeed what Jews refer to as a “Righteous Gentile” and I hope that you take that as the compliment it is meant to be.

I studied both the Torah, and its multi-hundred-year history of commentary, the Talmud while attending summer school at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I ate in the same cafeteria where only a few years later a suicide bomber devastated the entire place and killed many students (both Jews and Christians) — right next to a beautiful plaza there on Mt. Scopus donated by Nancy Reagan and appropriately called the “Nancy Reagan Plaza.”

I learned many things about my own faith while studying there, but one aspect stuck with me more than others. Firstly, even in the time of King David, Judaism had an *extremely* advanced and well developed sense of ethics. Ethics are those “laws” if you wish to call them that, they are really more “guidelines” which G-d set out for the Jews as an interactive behavior code in which they were to interact both with themselves, and with other men. Ethics has to do with life on earth, not the hereafter. In that respect, it is a constrained, but nevertheless very important body of knowledge.

Jews effectively “invented” — with the inspiration of G-d, what we now know as Judeo-Christian ethics. And they did so a very very long time ago when most of the world were living as barbarians. Only the Greeks and the Romans could be said to have developed a society that had *some* aspects of these ethics. But theirs fell short since they were not — and this is a key point — based upon monotheism.

I wanted to relay one aspect of Jewish ethics at the time of King David. Before he conquered Jerusalem from the Jebusites, in approximately 1000 BC, there was already a long list of ethics which David was commanded by G-d to obey. One of these little known aspects or characteristics of Jewish ethics, even as far back as 3,000 years ago when again, whole villages were killed if they contravened Greek or Roman law (the word “Decimate” comes from the practice of Romans killing 10 non-Romans if one Roman was killed).

In any case, David knew he had to conquer Jerusalem in order to unite the Hebrew tribes — it also provided a naturally impregnable high ground from which one could defend the city well. On a clear day you can see the Mediterranean Sea from the heights of Jerusalem. But David was constrained by the ethics G-d had set forth for him. And one very little known “rule” was that if Jews were going to have to conquer a city, they could NOT attack on all 4 sides! They were *commanded* by G-d to attack on only 3 sides of the city. Why? So that any and all people living within would be given a chance to leave, in peace, through the remaining corridor.

One should pause for a moment to compare this to the methods used my Islam, a full 1,700 years later. They would used the known practice of deception, or “Taqiyya” in order to lull the inhabitants into a false sense of security. And in fact some of the first (and still celebrated to THIS VERY DAY!) “victories,” were over Jewish towns living near Medina and Mecca. The Muslims are still very proud of this fact. In any case, suffice it to say that no “4th corridor was left open, and all the males of a village were killed, irrespective of age. All women were taken into slavery as concubines.

It is my belief that Jesus, a Jew, saw the inherent “goodness” in these well developed ethics. And while the Jews were commanded to “be a light unto the nations” (effectively to attempt to teach by living in a proper way), I think Jesus knew that most men needed more “motivation” than simply having an example being set for them to mimic. And so it is my belief that he effectively devised the notion, if you will allow me to say it like this, of “the carrot and a stick.” The carrot being the admittance into heaven after a life well led, while the stick was banishment into eternal damnation.

Thank you for the opportunity to express my views.

  9. I agree with Pam. There have been other US presidents who were even less in support of Israel. To keep alleging obama is a muslim by idiotic conspiracy theories is foolish. He took his oath on a bible, not quran.
I agree that Israel is in for a hard time but i feel its unlikely the world will listen to israel. They will rather believe palestinian propaganda machine. Our prayers should be with Israel and its people, and that God will the eyes of arabs to this folly of antizionism.

  10. Hey. You are a righteous Gentile. Does that mean you are Christian? Or are you a Jew with all the promises of Abraham, just like a true ‘Christian.’ Or what. This will all shake out for the good of Israel with Jerusalem as it’s capitol. Keep the faith. In Yahshuas name, Shalom.

  11. We need to demand that our evil, anti-God, anti-American, anti-Israeli administration
in Washington, stop cursing Israel, by their pressuring of Israel to give up land
and to stop building on land given to them by The Sovereign God, and to stop
pressuring Israel to divide the Holy City. That land and city is non-negotiable.
Bill Clinton tried to do the same thing just prior to leaving office as president,
and roughly a year later 9-11 occurred. It is foolhardy to enter into contracts with
Islamist. The Koran teaches them to lie when they can gain the advantage by doing so.
It is perfectly acceptable for Muslims to enter contracts that they have no intention
opf keeping. Those who are true to the Koran (such as the terrorist) can’t be ruled
by others. They see the laws of Allah (the moon god of Mecca and a false idol) as being
above all. All other laws are human laws and can thus be broken. That is why 0 buma
(who grew up as a Muslim, studied the Koran, and whose priorities are all Muslim and
anti-American) does not hesitate to disobey our laws and our Constitution. They are
human laws to him and can be broken. Yes, he attended a “christian” church and claims
to be christian, but it is to his advantage to do that. It is obvious to anyone that
is alert, that he is lying, he is in campaign mode and buying the christian vote. He
sides with the Muslims against American and against Israel. And he is therefore cursing
Israel and calling down God’s judgment on America. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and
we pray that Israel will not give up any land nor stop building on the land that is theirs.
That land was not loaned to them, it is theirs. And it is theirs forever.

  12. I have been praying as instructed by the Holy Bible, for Peace for Jerusalem and
I find my heart crying out to the LORD about the false peace that is staring Israel in the face. I don’t know for a fact but I believe in my heart that God does not want Israel to make a pact with the devil. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness and Satan was promising to give him the keys to the kingdom and other things, which was not all his to give, Jesus spoke God’s word back to him and God was there with him. We should not lay down the Word of God, speak God’s word out loud to all those in opposition to Israel being her own Nation and not giving up the land. Let us all who believe God’s Word stand for what is right; Fight the good fight of faith, put on your whole Armor of God. The war is not over and that does not mean we don’t want peace,
we just don’t want the enemy in the camp, taking over.

  15. I am old enough to have read first-hand, countless articles on attempted peace between Israel and the various Arab and Muslim groups. Since 1948, the Israelis have tried to live in peace with those who would kill them in a heartbeat. Each time, their enemies took what was offered and immediately broke the peace. They then demanded more concessions from the Israelis and, as more was given, again attacked Israel. When is the world, especially the US, going to wake up and realize that the Palestinians, Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, Iran, Egypt and Jordan, do not want peace. It’s all lip service to get as much in concessions as they can, while waiting for the right moment (for them) to wipe Israel off the face of the earth and murder every Jew they can. I’m sick and tired of other countries, and ashamed of the US, for always trying to get Israel to give things up, while saying very little when the rockets continue to kill Israelis. My most fervent wish, and prayer to G-d, is for Israel to say enough is enough, and stop making concessions, and stop even trying to make a peace they know will never be kept by the enemy. The US must get rid of Obama, a friend to the foes of Israel, and get a Conservative President who will truly side with and assist Israel, in her efforts to be left to live in peace.

  16. God stated He would bless those who bless Israel, and curse those who curse Israel. New technology now enables Israel to develop and ultimately draw upon recently discovered 250 billion barrels of shale oil reserves in Israel. This is the third largest find in the world, behind only Russia and China. However, those two countries are expected to totally absorb their shale oil production in domestic consumption. That means that Israel will become the world’s largest exporter of shale oil. The quality of the Israeli oil so produced will be a high valuable grade. The extraction cost is estimated at $35-$40 per barrel, so with current prices at over $100 per barrel, the project will be viable. Israel does need to take environmental precautions to protect important aquifers from the “fracking” process to be used, but that can be handled by Israeli engineers. The huge gas find that Israel recently made offshore in the Mediterranean will supply Israel’s domestic needs for gas. But this shale oil puts Israel’s 250 billion barrels on a par with Saudi Arabia’s estimated 260 billion barrels of reserves. Many experts feel that Saudi estimates of reserves are greatly exaggerated. The long and the short of it is that America, should it remain a friend and supporter of Israel, which it should for all kinds of reasons, may well have its oil requirements substantially met by imports from Israel! This would truly be a blessing bestowed upon America. God’s statement in the bible is thus proven once again. If America continues to bless Israel (with support and friendship), God will bless America.

  17. I have keenly followed Israel’s growth and development since she was recognised as a nation again in 1948, and have studied her history through the O.T. and believe the prophecies concerning her future. Right now, there must be no more concessions to her enemies. There have been too many already. I pray that she will be strengthened to stand firm regardless of what is thrown at her and how many leaders pressure her to give up more of her land. The Lord’s people must stand with her and intercede to the Source of all Power and Wisdom for her. God bless Israel.

  18. There is a saying “Actions speaker louder than words”, there has been so little action by Israel’s neighbours to suggest that they really want peace. When I visited Israel during the time of Ehud Barak there was little mention of Israel’s offer to build and supply de-salination plants for its neighbour, in the press. A famous former king of Israel wrote “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem”, this request still echos today and should also be for the whole of the Soverign state of Israel.

  21. A pastor in Texas burns a copy [mind you, a ‘copy’, not the original] of the Qu’ran [a mild social indiscretion, I think] and the muslims murder seven UN workers in the Middle East. Could they not have, on a ‘quid pro quo’ [tit for tat] basis, have burnt a copy [a ‘copy’, mind you, not the original] of the Bible instead? But that is exactly what one can expect from a culture/religion that cuts off a hand for stealing an apple … there is no correlation between the crime and the punishment at all. Are they crazy? It again confirms the emerging theory that ISLAM causes widespread, cultural INSANITY.

  22. Israel is God’s chosen people for it was through the Jewish people that the Messiah(Jesus Christ) would come. To the Jew first, then to the GentileGreek). For thousands of years the Arabs have fought the nation of Israel because they believe it was through their leniage that the land called Israel should have been given to them by God, not the Jewish people. So, here we are thousands of years in the future, and nothing has changed. However, one thing has intensified- their increased hatred for the Jews. Nations will soon gather together to rise up and attack Israel. When this happens, The Lord God Almighty will intervene and Christ will be revealed to the Arabs and to evry person on earth. In that day all will bow down and worship Him and declare He is “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

  25. I love Israel and the Jewish people. When I was visiting Israel I could feel the presence of God. He watches over His people and Israel with a holy hush. We are to keep our eyes on the Lord God Jehovah, Who, as in 2 Chron 20, delivered Jehosephat and the Israelites from their enemies. It is very interesting that back in the 1500’s when the King James version of the Bible was written, that the name ISRAEL was predominant in all writings in the Bible. It was always a nation. Israel’s enemies are mounting, but God said this would be happening and more difficult to deal with in the Latter Days. As a Christian, I will say, keep praying and praising God for DELIVERANCE for Israel, for all Jews worldwide, and for the Peace of Jerusalem. Also for all nations of the earth, especially ones that declare Christianity and Democratic Rule. All your other comments are very valid. We need to focus on Who God is and the Power of God. He Is the First and The Last and will not allow these murderous extremists create turmoil and continually stir up war and hate much longer. God gave Israel double for their rebellion, which started after the 40 year Wilderness experience. They have paid the price and their enemies will be demolished. 35. God’s Word is clear regarding the Jewish people’s right to the land of Israel, all of it….not just certain parts and pieces. The only “Right Of Return” is extended to Jewish people through out the world who need to live free and worship God as they feel moved to as a JEW without fear of reprisal or opression or prostylization from “over zealous”, insensative, and most probably well meaning Christian groups. The Jewish people have fought, struggled, and died to remain faithful to their God as a distinct and righteous nation of people for over 3000 years in exile from their land. God, His Son, and the Holy Spirit will do the work on the hearts of men and women, just as dreams of Jesus (YESHUA/ISA) are appearing to Muslims all over the Middle East bringing them to faith in Him. We are to just provide the Gospel, using our speech and conduct in witness to the Messaiah for those God IS calling to. I also believe in the State Of Israel’s right to build their country on every part of the land set aside in the man made Balfour agreement that the Arabs rejected. I also believe that the Israeli capital of Jerusalem is also the epicenter of faith and world events for all. Jesus Yeshua The Messaiah will return there to reign supreme from it’s mount. Jerusalem is never to be partitioned off or divided with the enemies of God! This is also true in regards to exchanging (surrendering)-ANY part of the land of Israel to Arabs in hopes of a peace “deal” (Takiya?)…If they do not wish to pledge their allegiance to the Jewish State of Israel (Ha Tikvah), and live as an Israeli citizen in Israel they should be allowed, and assisted by the Jewish State to move residence to their own national home that was established and has been waiting for ther immigration since the 1950’s in the country now known as Jordan. All UN disputed lands are an eternal inheritance to the Jewish people, from the Almighty One, Blessed be He… and ARE PART OF ISRAEL FOREVER! (Gaza, Golan, West Bank,& East Jerusalem) IT’S THEIR LAND! This is the “Roadmap to Peace” that is willed by God. Pray for the peace and safety of Jerusalem and the nation of Israel. This I believe is the heart of the Almighty, Blessed be He……For the grace and unbounding love of Jesus!!!! Support and defend the Jewish State of Israel, Choose to be on the right side of this SPIRITUAL WAR!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus is Lord of all…I am stepping down off my soapbox for now!

David, respectfully,Mr.Haniyeh’s comments about IsraEL and Osama are not ‘eloquent testimony’ but fomenting toxins and the misguiding praise to a monsterous man he holds as a hero…I heard on the news some muslims are up in arms at Mr. bin Ladin being buried at sea, that that will make it harder for him to find eternal rest. 41. As long as the palestinian Authority holds no strengh (strong Authority) so long should isreal do all it can to ‘cage’ the harmas by not bending back over for peace.Hamas does not know the meaning of that word ‘peace’.The PA IS INPOTENT.
More over peace will come to Isreal when the Lord returns and destroys all her enemies, before then peace is an illusion.
Jehovah will keep ,defend, shield, and fight for Isreal.Shalom Isreal and all grafted Isrealite.

  42. If you think the masters can and will one day give you freedom or provide for everyone’s needs or wants then both sides have one thing in common, you are all fools.

The Governing parties are unbeatable. Immigration cannot be enforced or reversed. Life does not begin at conception. If you believe in any one of these statements then you are just blowing smoke in here.

Protect your right to self-preservation. We must stand together as one. Only those with a strong will to maintain numbers and a defensive army will prosper. The more people that engage in distraction first and the best of the bad second the easier it is for the focused., and depend on active rolls from people as any movement needs in order to succeed. links to these movements, you might be able to click on my name. I urge you to join today so that at least our children will not die as slaves.

Abraham Lincoln ended independent slavery and began institutional slavery. This is fact that deceptive vanity will deny.

  43. It is the duty of every Christian to rise up in defense of Israel As in Isaiah 62:1, no one has the right to threaten it’s existence because that land was promised and given to the Israelites by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. , individual volunteers should rise up as prayer warriors, military warriors… for the sake of Zion, the problem in the Middle East is not the Arabs but ISLAM and it’s Quoran which was inspired by the devil and written by Mohammed it’s demon possessed prophet who is right now burning in HELL. I advice those Arabs to start reading the Bible and they will know that the place they call Palestine is actually the land of the Jews called Judea which was invaded and occupied by the Romans. You Arabs should know that you are attempting to fight a futile battle because God is with Israel. Get to know the truth and the truth will set you free. I pray that Israel does not make peace with any authority Hamas, Iran…that threatens it’s existence… You Arabs need Jesus not Mohammed Jesus is the only truth not terrorism and soon Jesus will prevail every demon possessed soul in the Middle East, anti-Christ China and all over the world! Because He Lives

  44. Christ Jesus is a Jew, I stand with Jesus and lift
up Father God’s chosen people Israel in prayer that they may know in full Father God’s love and salvation for them all. We gentiles, who by the grace of God, are adopted into His family by faith and trust and acceptance of Jesus as saviour by His death and resurrection and is now sitting at His heavenly Father’s right hand.
