Guilty Until Proven Guilty

Filed under: All Posts — brogsblog @ 3:05 pm

The following is a reprint of an article that first appeared on the website Foreign Policy magazine on June 9, 2010.

On the evening of April 28, 2003, a crowd of approximately 200 Iraqi civilians gathered outside U.S. Army headquarters in Fallujah to protest the occupation of their city. As tension grew, U.S. soldiers from the 82nd Airborne stationed on the building’s roof began firing upon the crowd, killing at least 13 Iraqis and wounding more than 70. U.S. troops insisted that they fired only to defend themselves from gunfire coming from the crowd. The protesters claimed that they were unarmed and never fired at the soldiers.

The odds are that you have never beaten your breast or searched your soul over this incident in Fallujah. In fact, you have likely never even heard of this incident. And the odds are that you have never heard of the tens if not hundreds of incidents like it, in which civilians have been killed as U.S. soldiers fought in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade.

But the odds are overwhelming that you have heard — repeatedly — of an Israeli operation last week aboard a Gaza-bound ship in the Mediterranean. Israel’s naval commandos, several of whom were beaten to within an inch of their lives, responded with lethal force, killing nine people.

The term “double standard” does not sufficiently capture this phenomenon. It’s not just that the Israelis are being held to a different — and immeasurably higher — standard than the rest of humanity. Israel is now being judged in the absence of any objective standard whatsoever. As Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week, it seems that Israel is now “guilty until proven guilty.”

Sadly, it is no surprise to see angry mobs on the streets of Tehran or London calling for Jewish blood. It seems that we now must accustom ourselves to similar scenes playing out in Istanbul as well. Yet what is far more troubling is that we are now hearing these critiques being echoed right here in the United States.

This is hardly the first time that my friends and neighbors have been strangely focused on Israel’s alleged misdeeds. Many complained about the collateral damage in Gaza associated with Israel’s 2009 Operation Cast Lead, intended to stop Hamas from firing thousands of missiles into its southern cities. Yet these same friends were completely unaware of the destruction wrought by America’s armed forces in Fallujah less than two years after the April 2003 incident described above. The U.S. Army destroyed nearly one-fifth of the city — and damaged far more — in its effort to crush the insurgency that had taken root there.

Many of my friends are horrified by Israel’s blockade of Hamas-controlled Gaza. Yet these same people never once questioned the United States’ blockade of Saddam-controlled Iraq throughout most of the 1990s. They have no idea that America’s enemies protested the U.S.-led blockade of Iraq in terms almost identical to those they now use to protest Israel’s blockade of Gaza. In his 1996 fatwa declaring war on the United States, for example, Osama bin Laden claimed that “more than 600,000 Iraqi children have died due to lack of food and medicine and as a result of the unjustifiable aggression [sanctions] imposed on Iraq.” In 1998, bin Laden again cited the blockade of Iraq and the “over 1 million” Iraqis the United States had killed there.

Constructive criticism is fine and welcome. We must always demand that the United States — and its allies such as Israel — adhere to the highest ethical standards in the fight against terror. We must ensure that every possible effort is made to avoid civilian casualties. The U.S. military must never cease to treasure every single innocent life.

Yet the attacks on Israel from most quarters — and the United States’ increasing impatience with Israel, even as it fights a similar battle, with similar tactics, against a similar enemy — go well beyond such legitimate critiques. The American public and its government should be wary of joining this chorus of condemnation. Americans should understand by now that fighting enemies who shoot from civilian areas and hide behind human shields — or sometimes masquerade as civilians — will often require that soldiers make difficult choices, and will inevitably produce mistakes. To the extent that we in the West blur the line between those fighting terrorism and the terrorists themselves, we help legitimize a standard that will boomerang back on ourselves. It already has.

Early last month we had a startling reminder of where this flawed logic can lead. On May 1, a crude car bomb was discovered in an SUV parked in the heart of Times Square. The police later identified the prime suspect as Faisal Shahzad, an American of Pakistani origin. In trying to figure out what had turned Shahzad from an upwardly mobile financial analyst into a would-be terrorist, commentators have focused on an email in which he complained about the killing of his fellow Muslims in Pakistan, Iraq, and Palestine and claimed, “The crusade has already started against Islam and Muslims with cartoons of our beloved Prophet.” Elsewhere Shahzad noted a moderate Pakistani politician who had “bought into the Western jargon” of calling the Taliban and their allies “extremist.”

The path toward terrorism begins with the erasure of moral lines. It starts with the equation of terrorists — who seek to kill civilians — with the armed forces who seek to stop the terrorists. It mistakes cartoons with corpses, collateral damage with intentional murder. It fails to distinguish between an errant missile and an intentional suicide bomb. It confuses the “extremists” with those who fight extremism.

As we Americans fight the war on terror, we must fight with our heads as well as our hearts. Americans must always demand the highest standards from their army and from those of allies such as Israel. But we should never validate the type of thinking that is the hallmark of the very enemies we pursue. Today Israel’s soldiers are in the dock. But tomorrow it will be our own.

  1. I totally agree with Cathy. This President is the worst thing to happen to this great country ever!He leaves the Prime Minister of Israel in the basement of the White House, and then cowtows to the Arabs. He is a disgrace. We must continue to trust our precious Lord Jesus Christ, and know that in these last days that He has His hand on Israel, and is bringing the Jews back to Israel, and irregardless of those who are trying to destroy Israel, as Christians we must continually pray for Israel, and know that in the end….WE WIN!!!!!! America will only be destroyed if she rejects the God of the Bible, and forsakes God’s chosen people.. the Jews.

  2. Hello believers,
Our God is all knowing and those who hate the Jews do not just hate them, they hate the Lord too and the God who judges the heart is aware of this. Jews and the Israel in general is always attacked for no reason, but they attack to defend their very existence and God grants them victory. Israelis attacks are well calculated to minimise injuries to civilians but their enemies target even the civilians. US shares the blessings of Abraham thro supporting Israel and if they fail in this we will see fortunes changing setting stage for the antichrist, the beast and the begining of the end.

  3. Deuteronomy 7:1-10 1)”When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations — the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you —

2)and when the Lord your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy.

3)Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,

4)for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods, and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.

5)This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire.

6)For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.

7)The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

8)But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

9)Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.

10)But those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction; he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.”

Go on and read in Chapter 7 verse 15 how God Himself said that he would inflict horrible diseases on all who hate Israel!!!! And verse 22, “The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.”
Verse 23, “But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.” 24, “He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them.”

And for those of you who may argue, “that was a long time ago and they are ancient writings”, 1Samuel 15:29 says, “He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind.” He is the same God who led the Israelites out of Egypt, He is the same God who parted the Red Sea, and He is now the same God who will give Israel victory over their present day enemies and curse the enemies of Israel!

Only true Bible believing Christians will agree with these words! I’m sorry for those of you who reject these words and I pray for you to turn to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is a mighty God and Israel is the apple of His eye! Zechariah 2:8, “…..for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye — 9)”I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.”

  4. “And the Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of man, and a sword, not of man, shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor. His rock shall pass away in terror, and his officers desert the standard in panic.” says the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.’ Is. 31
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” Jh 16 I may be one of the few ‘Christians’ who believes our president knows Christ. He is also a ninja. You may know enough history to know they know what an atom bomb is. Yahshua (Yah=God; shua= to save) the name his disciples knew him by, is the master of all defensive and offensive arts.
The sword is the word of God and will be delivered more or less personally to a small contingent of revolutionary guards at a nuclear facility in Iran within a few weeks. Easy enough to find out if I’m a liar huh? There will be something of a roiling among muslims, it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Israel shall stand in wonder.

  5. This was written by a woman born in Egypt as a Muslim.

Joys of Muslim Women By Nonie Darwish

In the Muslim faith a Muslim man can marry a child as young as 1 year old and have sexual intimacy with this child. Consummating the marriage by 9.
The dowry is given to the family in exchange for the woman (who becomes his slave) and for the purchase of the private parts of the woman, to use her as a toy.
Even though a woman is abused she can not obtain a divorce.
To prove rape, the woman must have (4) male witnesses.
Often after a woman has been raped, she is returned to her family and the family must return the dowry. The family has the right to execute her (an honor killing) to restore the honor of the family. Husbands can beat their wives ‘at will’ and he does not have to say why he has beaten her.

The husband is permitted to have (4 wives) and a temporary wife for an hour (prostitute) at his discretion.
The Shariah Muslim law controls the private as well as the public life of the woman.

In the West World ( America ) Muslim men are starting to demand Shariah Law so the wife can not obtain a divorce and he can have full and complete control of her. It is amazing and alarming how many of our sisters and daughters attending American Universities are now marrying Muslim men and submitting themselves and their children unsuspectingly to the Shariah law. By passing this on, enlightened American women may avoid becoming a slave under Shariah Law. Ripping the West in Two.Author and lecturer Nonie Darwish says the goal of radical Islamists is to impose Shariah law on the world, ripping Western law and liberty in two.

She recently authored the book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law. Darwish was born in Cairo and spent her childhood in Egypt and Gaza before immigrating to America in 1978, when she was eight years old. Her father died while leading covert attacks on Israel . He was a high-ranking Egyptian military officer stationed with his family in Gaza . When he died, he was considered a “shahid,” a martyr for jihad. His posthumous status earned Nonie and her family an elevated position in Muslim society. But Darwish developed a skeptical eye at an early age. She questioned her own Muslim culture and upbringing.. She converted to Christianity after hearing a Christian preacher on television. In her latest book, Darwish warns about creeping sharia law – what it is, what it means, and how it is manifested in Islamic countries. For the West, she says radical Islamists are working to impose sharia on the world. If that happens, Western civilization will be destroyed. Westerners generally assume all religions encourage a respect for the dignity of each individual. Islamic law (Sharia) teaches that non-Muslims should be subjugated or killed in this world. Peace and prosperity for one’s children is not as important as assuring that Islamic law rules everywhere in the Middle East and eventually in the world. While Westerners tend to think that all religions encourage some form of the golden rule, Sharia teaches two systems of ethics – one for Muslims and another for non-Muslims. Building on tribal practices of the seventh century, Sharia encourages the side of humanity that wants to take from and subjugate others.

While Westerners tend to think in terms of religious people developing a personal understanding of and relationship with God, Sharia advocates executing people who ask difficult questions that could be interpreted as criticism . It’s hard to imagine, that in this day and age, Islamic scholars agree that those who criticize Islam or choose to stop being Muslim should be executed. Sadly, while talk of an Islamic reformation is common and even assumed by many in the West, such murmurings in the Middle East are silenced through intimidation.
While Westerners are accustomed to an increase in religious tolerance over time, Darwish explains how petro dollars are being used to grow an extremely intolerant form of political Islam in her native Egypt and elsewhere.

(In twenty years there will be enough Muslim and delusional Left voters in the U.S. To elect the President by themselves! (they have already!) Rest assured they will do so… You can look at how they have taken over several towns in the USA .. Dearborn Mich. Is one… And there are others…)

I think everyone in the U.S. Should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on!

It is too bad that so many are disillusioned with life and Christianity to accept Muslims as peaceful.. Some may be but they have an army that is willing to shed blood in the name of Islam.. the peaceful support the warriors with their finances and own kind of patrioti sm to their religion. While America is getting rid of Christianity from all public sites and erasing God from the lives of children the Muslims are planning a great jihad on America ..

  6. Thank goodness there are some who can warn us of what may be in store for us if we do not take action! I agree that this should be required reading for everyone in the USA & in other “free” countries.
I am unable to support financially, but I can support w/ my prayers; the only thing keeping me calm as these things go on around us is the knowledge that God is in control, nothing is an “accident” but is overseen by His watchful eye. If this information comes to your eyes, you should not ignore it–God sent the message to you, & you can be His instrument!

  7. Let us stay positive in this tough time for Israel. The Lord commands us to come to Him and he will give us “rest”. He also commands us to love one another. It’s easy to throw stones but that flies in the face of what our Father asks us to do.

Remember that God allows all things on earth to happen and how wonderfully he is revealing before our eyes His plan! We know His plan, it is spelled out for us in His Word, written through inspiration of the Holy Spirit —–by God’s favored Nation, Israel.

We love you and support you – not for selfish gain but because it pleases God, our Creator to obey all that He has asked us to do.

May God Bless Israel, Jerusalem and His Holy Mount, Zion.

  8. I think that it is time that all of us who believe gets a very bad deal in the way that the media reports all these incidents–always blaming Israel, no matter what really happened–need to make constant phone calls and write many letters to the madia who constantly make those”mistakes”. (if they are indeed mistakes, or not just an anti-Israel agenda.)I have started to do so, but it is easy for them to ignore the protests of just one or two people. We need thousands bonbarding them with prot5ests, before they might just take notice. In the call that I made re the recent boarding episode, where I explained what had REALLY happened, I was met with the reply–“but there are always two sides to any story!!” So I asked them what could possibly be said regarding the so-called peace-loving cheats who smuggled arms on a boat that was supposed to be for food, medical supplies etc. The person admitted that they didn’t know, but insisted that there must be another side to the story–EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE STRUGGLING TO THINK OF IT. Another Radio Stion admitted that they had NOT got the story themselves, but had just copied the story that SKY gave out. When I asked why they said that SKY would have taken legal advice on the story–so it was “safe” for them to repeat it. I asked them if they felt comfortable reading out a very misleading story–and they said yes–because they were covered legally. Apparently the truth has ceased to matter.
We do indeed live in sad times. But there can be no room for compromise–as that is a sign of weakness in the eyes of very evil enemies.

    God Bless CUFI

  9. Objectivity not condemnation should be the bedrock of any press. I believe news should be reported objectively and without bias but the press handling of the flotila event was biased. There was no coverage on the flotila’s with no harm done to it but rather they chose to capitalize on the footage of the killings and not the beatings of the isreali soldiers. At first news i believe that Israel was to be condemned for such acts on innocent, unarmed and unprovoked killings but when you now get all the facts I personally might even do much worse than the israelis did to save my life.

  10. God bless Israel.

Unfortunately, many people do not know the truth that is available in the news. They choose to believe only what is presented as “persecution of an oppressed people”.

These oppressed peoples are in their situations because of the following. The good people in the Moslem world are afraid to speak for the truth. Extremists control the influence of Moslem world. These extremists do not care for their own people.

    God bless Israel.

About the Gaza bound ship,… from the VIDEO,… you can plainly see that the Israelies were merely in self defense mode, as anyone being beaten would be.

This is a crucial and critical moment for all brethren who consider the Christian faith that is in us is still living then it is the time for us to stand up to defend the State of Israel and protect our own land which God had promised. The land that is full of milk and honey(US).
Let not be deceived by our enemy who are now deceiving the whole world regarding the recent incident on the flotilla. My opinion was all a set up by these so called humanitarian aid.The warnings of announcement had been repeated but they still insisted. When boarded, clearly those videos had shown that IDF were almost torn by those passengers.
From these few points those who sees justice can tell you that it was provocation.
As brethren let us stand at the forefront of this incident and declared to the world that Israel was on a self-defended and precautioned attitude to safeguard its own country.
The Lord our God Jesus Christ of Nazareth will never forsake His chosen want.Amen

  17. I don’t understand the comment about the uproar about the blockade on Cuba. I was alive when “it” all began. Communist Russia wanted to put a military base on Cuban land. President Kennedy said no. Russia said they would use the atomic bomb if the US tried to stop Russia and the US was given a date to back down. Since Communist Russia was our enemy than with a history of taking over countries by force and Cuba was at our backdoor, the threat couldn’t be taken lightly. The world sat on pins and needles waiting for the Russian deadline. They backed down. The blockade was put on Cuba to force The communists out, which hasn’t worked because the people of Cuba who really want to leave are “allowed to leave by not noticing them leaving or imprisoned or sent to Spain.” Saves an uprising against communist rule. The U.S. could really take over Cuba at any time by using its full military force not by using a bunch of Cubans to overtake Cuba. The U.s. was right to stand up to the communist threat and to keep the communists in Cuba although they did expand into South America bringing about a lot of “revolutionary” killing and destroying of villages and people not wanting communism but they didn’t conquer the US. Israel is being threatened by a much bigger religion with its unhappy miserable nasty followers who want Israel deader than a doornail. Israel has a right to say no to Islam just like the U.S. had a right to say no to communists, two enemies who love to conquer, subugate and kill it’s enemies. And actually, the blockade against Cuba drew marchers and screamers and Europeans yelling at the U.S. for saying no to the military base in Cuba and blaming the U.S. for bringing the world near the brink of disaster for months but due to the length of time of the blockage they finally moved on to their next accusing the U.S. of something.

They don’t always here the truth and don’t know what is going on in Israel and the rest of the World. Some know, but feel so “safe & secure” here they are ignoring every thing else, much like what happened in Nazi Germany.

  19. As I read Brog’s Blog I was struck by the comment “many of my friends”. As the Holy Spirit gives us discernment in these times we have to be “light” in the “darkness” to those who are deceived – especially our friends. The evil one continues to attack our nation, our states, our cities, our families, our children… and he will re-double his efforts as I believe the time is near for CHRIST’ return. As a “GOD following” Christian my responsibility is like Nehemiah showed us in the rebuilding of Jerusalem. I must stay focused on MY part of the wall. Don’t give way to the distractions but stand strong in GOD’s truth. While frustrated with our nations leadership and their path to destruction (moving away from our partnership with Israel) I can’t lose focus of what GOD has for me to do. 1 – SHARE THE GOSPEL. 2 – MAKE DISCIPLES. GOD will handle the rest. I pray for our nation and Israel but my main prayer focus is that GOD’s will would be done. We’re in a fallen world and NOTHING to do with Israel or TRUE Christianity will get a fair view. The further the US moves from Israel, the worse it is going to get for the US.

All those people and Governments who are fighting the terrorists as the Isreal, too would be joining in condemning Israel. It is not because, they believe what Israel had done wrong nor are sympathatic with the victims. It’s purely on account of political compulsions prevailing in their countries.

Islamic terrorism is the horrible bane of this world making it sleepless. It’s the cancer terminal to the world’s peaceful existence, sooner or later. It has grown too big to be contained. US is fighting a losing war against it. The majority of the world powers should unite. It’s a dream.

    CROSSROAD

I looked to the earth and it was formless and fading
I looked at the heavens and their light was gone
I looked at the mountains and they were quaking
I looked and there were no people to be found
I looked and the fruitful land was desert
Its towns ruined by the Lords fierce anger
Repent but my words fall on ears unopened
Repent but the refining goes on in vain

Should you not fear me declares the Lord?
Should you not tremble in my presence?
I made the sand a boundary for the sea
And everlasting barrier it can not cross

The waves may roll but they can not prevail
They may roar but they can not cross it
They can only stand at the shore
    like an ever seeing profit

Stand at the crossroads and look
    Ask for the ancient paths
find where the good way is
    and walk in it
you will find your rest at last

They say we will not walk in it
I appointed watchmen over you and said
Listen to the sound of the trumpet
But you turned your head instead

    Listen oh faithless world
can you not hear his pain
He brought his son to die for you
    And rose him up again
    A mighty wind is blowing
if you don’t guard yourself you will fall
then it will make no sense to you
to have watchmen on the wall

I looked to the earth and it was formless and fading
I looked at the heavens and their light was gone
I looked at the mountains and they were quaking
I looked and there were no people to be found
I looked and the fruitful land was desert
Its towns ruined by the Lords fierce anger

  23. It is not surprising that many people of the United States have been brainwashed by the liberal media. When you consider the uneducated, ignorant, hedonistic and egocentric society we live in it is easy to understand.

Prayer and only prayer by ferverent Christians will stem the tide of this erroneous liberal nonsense. Only Divine intervention will work. May God have mercy on the United States. How far can a holy and just God be pushed before He executes judgment? One only has to look at the Old Testament to see what happened when the Jews became full of themselves and decided they didn’t need God and pursued false gods. What is different with the United States today? Do we not pursue false gods (materialism, secular wisdom, etc.)? Are we not arrogant, proud and unrepentant? Do we not think we have no need of God?

  24. To Whom It May Concern: There are many of us Christians who love Israel and know that God’s timetable of future events is all about Israel, His chosen people. We Christians are only grafted in. I daily pray for the peace of Jerusalem. God is going to take care of Israel, no matter what happens.

  25. The coment by ben dor is quite right . My country Kenya is now under siege by Muslims. When we were bombed in 1997 they didi not join Kenyans in denouncing this act. When a muslim terorist in the name of cleric for he publicly cals for killing of all Hindus, Christians and ofcourse Jews is arested so he can be deported to his country and note deported not prosecuted muslims staged demonstrations that brought Nairobi to a standstill. Wonder of wonders almost 60% were Somali refugees. Acept muslim migrants to America at your own peril.

  26. I am pleased to be a member of a church who support Israel. Christians eveywhere should recognise Gods eternal favour towards the jews. The nation of Israel continiued from Old Testament times into the New Testament. Thanks to jews who turned to Jesus, the world is being reached by Christ. God intended to save Israel first. Because of their rejection of Christ, salvation was preached to the gentiles. However, God never said that the jews are now excluded from salvation. God wants us to love them: To pray for them and to bless them in any practical way that we can. They are our brothers and sisters in Gods family. Therefore our desire must be for their salvation, not their destruction.
